Enjoy free entertainment on three outdoor stages featuring live music by local and regional bands. Salute to Summer is an unabashed “Star-Spangled” salute to great music, fun in the sun, and the men and women of the military who have sacrificed their lives throughout our history. 

The “Heroes Walk” display stretches along the boardwalk from 16th to 32nd Streets. Original essays written by local high school students are reproduced on four by eight foot banners easily read by passers-by.

Stroll the Virginia Beach boardwalk and enjoy these essays describing historical United States military conflicts. They help to remind us of the price that has been paid and is still being paid today by our United States military.

Military Aviation Museum presents the annual WWII Air Show, Warbirds Over The Beach 2018, a museum fundraiser.

Travel to Virginia Beach, alongside the bright sunshine of the Atlantic shoreline, where German submarines once hunted merchant ships in the Gulfstream waters. Look up in the sky, where you will see fighters and bombers of our armed forces patrol the countryside to protect our homeland from the Axis forces.

You will experience all this and more during the weekend before Memorial Day, with hundreds of re-enactors, actual warplanes of these times and entertainment reminiscent of the 1940s. event details

The Pirate Party on the Beach returns to the Virginia Beach oceanfront for two rollicking days of music, mayhem, and more!  This family-friendly event features activities designed to bring out the “pirate” in everyone.  Costume contests, games, a treasure hunt, pirate re-enactors, and movie on the beach all combine to celebrate those scallywags we all wish we could be: pirates.

When arriving at the Pirate Party on the Beach, beware of those scurvy scallywags, The Moody Crewe.  These pirate re-enactors will be posing for photographs, singing sea shanties, and demonstrating swordplay.  The Moody Crewe loves landlubbers, and this merry band of pirates will entertain as well as educate. Joining the Moody Crewe will be the Loose Cannon Company, Overland, Crew of the Archangel, and Cypher’s Gang.

Other activities throughout the weekend include bandana-making, face-painting, storytelling, weapons demonstrations, and shopping for pirate-themed merchandise.

Pirate re-enactors will abound, with those founding pirates of Pirate Party on the Beach, The Moody Crewe, leading the way with educational displays and lively interaction.  Pirate Party on the Beach is also pleased to welcome Blackbeard’s Crew to the event for the first time!

The Real Mermaids are returning to Pirate Party on the Beach!  Thrill to mermaids swimming in a unique 550 gallon tank!  There will even be opportunities to have your picture taken with a mermaid and to ask questions.

Pirate musicians The Motley Tones and Bob Zentz will entertain with authentic pirate tunes!

Saturday features a full day of activities.  The pirate stunt show by Shadow Players Stage Combat Group features actors in authentic costumes, sword-play, and audience interaction.  The show will be presented several times throughout each day.

On Saturday, participate in Cap’n Pete’s Treasure Hunt, where there’s a real buried treasure.

Beach Music on the Oceanfront

Beach Music Cruise-In

Beach Music Cruise-In features bands on the beach and cars on the boardwalk, blending the best of the “oldies” with dancing under the stars in a jam-packed blast to the past!  Enjoy the top Beach Music bands from up and down the East Coast descend on the Virginia Beach oceanfront in a nostalgic salute to the “good old days” of cool cars and hot tunes.  Stroll the boardwalk to view classic cars, hot rods, antiques, and more.

A three-day series of free concerts is presented on a stage built right on the beach at 30th Street.  Evening concerts on Friday give way to a full day of entertainment on Saturday and more daytime concerts on Sunday.

The car show feature turns the boardwalk into a local version of “Route 66,” with cars and trucks from yesterday and today competing for trophies and Best in Show cash prizes.

Individuals from throughout the region will display their autos.  Hot rods, street machines, classic cars, and more will line the Virginia Beach boardwalk for several blocks, where thousands of car enthusiasts and families can view the vehicles in a beautiful beach setting.

The car show will be on Saturday, May 20, from 10:00am-4:00pm.

The Beach Music Cruise-In festival atmosphere is enhanced with beer and food served in tents on the sand alongside a sea of beach chairs and dancing couples!  Boardwalk sponsors and vendors overlook the beach, luring visitors from the boardwalk into the fun and sun at Beach Music Cruise-In!  A giant 20-foot inflatable jukebox on the beach towers over the fun as festival-goers kick off their shoes and dance their cares away on the sands of Virginia Beach.

Beach Music Cruise-In is the winner of the 2011 Industry Appreciation Award (“CAMMY”) from the Carolina Beach Music Association.

Fusing together the rhythm of steel bands, ocean breezes, and great international food, the breathtaking Virginia Beach oceanfront becomes an “island paradise” for the weekend.

Co-produced with the Virginia Arts Festival, the Virginia International PAN Fest at its core is a steel drum band competition featuring over 20 high school, college, and community bands from throughout the United States. Bands attend workshops on Friday at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. These workshops are led by nationally-known steel drum artists and educators.

The Atlantic Coast Kite Festival features a variety of activities appropriate for all ages and all levels of kite aficionados. Kite fliers and spectators of all ages will experience a visual feast of beautiful kites on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

Saturday, May 5 – 10:00am-4:00pm

Everyone is invited to take part in the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival’s “Best Kite Contest.”  To enter this contest, participants bring a kite that they have made or purchased and fly it at the festival.  The contest consists of two parts: the actual kite itself (how it looks and how well it is made), and the participant’s ability to fly the kite.  Participants must be able to fly their kites consecutively in the air for 5 minutes at a height of 100 feet.  Kites will be judged on Flight (ability to fly for 5 minutes), Structural Design, Craftsmanship, and Visual Appeal.  There will be three competitive divisions: Master, Novice, and Youth (ages 7-14).  Trophies will be awarded for all divisions.  >more
